Fast and Furious 9 will no longer be released in theaters in 2019, instead hitting theaters in 2020.

Universal delayed the ninth film in the Fast and Furious franchise’s release to April 10, 2020. When Furious 8, 9, and 10 release dates were announced, FF9 originally had an April 19, 2019 date.

No word on if Fast and Furious 10’s April 2, 2021 release date has changed either. As a result of the release date change, Trolls 2 will now move from Furious 9’s new date to February 14, 2020.

The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the franchise, released in theaters this year and grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Though some of the film’s release was mired by reports of behind-the-scenes fighting between stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the two reportedly patched things up enough to make room for Johnson to return for Furious 9.

Not only that, but Universal is reportedly considering a spinoff of the films focused on Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw following filming of and audience response to Fate.

Officially announced films in the franchise at this point, however, remain only the ninth and tenth films. Producer Neal Mortiz said earlier this year the plan is to end the mainline franchise with that tenth film.

Franchise star Michelle Rodriguez has also been vocal recently about the franchise’s future, saying it must “evolve or die” when it comes to the Furious series’ female characters.
